Celebrity Edge Ship Review

The Celebrity Edge is a cruise ship with a lot of unique features from the movable magic carpet hanging off the side to the eclectic artwork found around the ship.  Upon embarkation I had questions I don’t usually have about a cruise ship like: How many different styles of chairs can there possibly be on board this ship? Why is there a giant bronze horse? Is that a graffiti wall?

But outside of the artwork there are also some unique spaces and venues such as Eden, Cafe al Bacio, and of course, the Magic Carpet.

Let’s Start With A Review Of Some Outdoor Venues On The Celebrity Edge Cruise Ship

Pool & Resort Deck

The most unique and probably most photographed part of the pool and resort deck area is the giant butterfly.  It is a unique feature that adds that little element of beauty to the pool itself.  The pool and deck are very functional.  It is a long narrow pool, but has a lot of shallow areas around it where you can sit on the side.  I feel like often in a square pool it can be challenging to find a spot because all the places around the edge will be full – nobody likes to stand in the center of the pool.  This long skinny pool solves that problem very effectively.

The deck is tiered and the deck chairs have the same problem of cruise ships everywhere – the ones closest to the pool fill up quickly and one often has to go a distance from the pool to find an empty set of chairs.

One thing I really like about Celebrity is the beach towel situation.  The beach towels are left rolled up on the lounge chairs first thing in the morning, but after the first occupants of the chair have left you can grab your own beach towel from the towel holders at either end of the resort deck.  You can also return your soiled towels there when you are done.  I love that you don’t have to check the towels out and you don’t have to harass your cabin steward.  You just get a towel when you need one and return it when you are finished with it.  So easy!

Jogging Track

The jogging track is a step above the jogging tracks on most cruise ships.  It crosses multiple levels so it actually has some incline.  It is also much longer – you are still just doing laps around the hot, sunny, windy top deck of a ship, but it takes you longer to complete each lap and there are interesting things to see along the way.  Such as the giant horse.  Why is there a giant bronze horse on the Celebrity Edge?  It’s art that’s why.  And the Celebrity Edge is a ship that is filled with art above and beyond your traditional cruise ship paintings.

Rooftop Garden

The Rooftop Garden onboard the Celebrity Edge is a multi-purpose sort of space. It has a large screen where it shows movies (mostly during the day – what’s that about??).  When not in use for movies, the screen just seems to rotate between relaxing imagery and funny, soundless videos.  The couches are comfortable and the decorations unique, though it seems like it would be hot during the day.

The rooftop garden is a great place to hang out in the evening and a great place for your formal night photos. Read a review of where else to take cruise elegant photos on the Celebrity Edge Cruise ship: Top 8 Places To Take Formal Night Photos on the Celebrity Edge.

Sunset Bar & Lounge Area

The Sunset Bar is one of the smoking areas onboard the ship.  That, plus the fact that we had an aft-facing balcony on this cruise, meant we never spent any time in this area, but they did have some fun looking seats.  I always love the view of the back of this ship so if we hadn’t had our own private view I’m sure we would have spent some time up there!

Magic Carpet

This is one of the unusual features of the Celebrity Edge and I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it until we got on board.  And then honestly it became less interesting.  It’s just an extra bar and seating area.  It does have glass sides so you can see over the edge and into the water.  This also allows you to see the side of the ship from above which is a unique perspective.  And it’s cool that it moves.  But as to what you do with the space – it’s just a regular old bar and lounge area.

Review of the Inside Areas of the Celebrity Edge

Eden

Eden is an interesting space for a couple of different reasons.  First, simply the number of functions of the space is perplexing.  The bar and lounge area is a given.  Then there is a little coffee shop with sandwiches tucked away in the corner.  On the bottom floor there is a whole specialty dining restaurant.  Then there’s this weird walk-way with seating off the back of the ship at an angle.  Eden is kind of challenging to get a grasp on, but it is a fun area with a ton of different seating options.

Martini Bar

The Martini Bar itself is a pretty normal atrium-style space. The space itself is not as grand as some cruise ship atriums and it has a more intimate feel.  It is the bartenders who make this exciting.  They are tricksters and showmen.  They juggle, perform tricks and generally entertain.  Even if you are not interested in a martini, it makes for a great show!

Martini Bar Celebrity Edge

Cafe al Bacio

With a seating area overlooking the Martini Bar, Café al Bacio has an open coffee shop vibe.  It has many more tables than a lot of cruise-ship coffee houses.  You can sit at a table and order your coffee from a passing waiter and get it in a real cup or order a to-go version at the bar.  Its tables are a great place to spend some indoor time hanging out with friends or people watching.

The idea of sitting here an enjoying some good coffee made more appealing because these are included in the price of your cruise. Read more about What’s Included On A Celebrity Cruise.

Casino

The biggest advantage to the casino on the Celebrity Edge is that it is non-smoking.  There were quite a few tables with all your standard games + slot machines.  We personally spent our casino time at the craps tables, but it was pretty standard there except the smoking factor.  I’m sure that it is a downside if you are a smoker, but we thought it was pretty fabulous to not need specific clothes to wear just to gamble.

Anywhere you find an unusual chair

This is a weird “place to hang out” on a cruise ship, but there are just interesting chairs scattered around the ship that make a great place to park yourself to wait, people watch or just idle away a few minutes before heading on to your next activity.  This is one of the things that makes the Celebrity Edge so unique and such a fascinating ship.

In all, the Celebrity Edge is one of the most beautiful cruise ships I have ever been on.  Its décor from the inside to the outside appears to be done with a purpose and has a clearly defined image of different paces rather than having one overarching theme.  This makes a walk through the ship more interesting and means that several days into the cruise you can still say “Well that is a cool little area – I didn’t know it was there!”
